Experienced HR leaders who step into the seat, steady the people function, and lead the work while your permanent search runs.
A leadership gap in HR does not wait for a search to finish. Compliance deadlines, open enrollment, employee relations issues, and strategic initiatives all keep moving whether someone is in the seat or not. When your CHRO leaves or a new role outgrows its current leadership, you need someone who can step in with real authority and keep the people function running while the permanent search takes its course.
Talent Executives provides interim and fractional CHRO and HR leadership through our partnership with Gig Talent, a network of Executive Entrepreneurs™ who have led people functions at scale. These are not consultants observing from the side. They are experienced operators who take ownership of the work from day one.
One engagement shows what this looks like when it works the way it should. A company needed an interim CHRO to bridge a leadership gap, layered with cultural friction nobody could yet describe in specific terms. Rather than treating the search as someone else’s project, the interim leader, an Executive Entrepreneur™ from Gig Talent’s network, spent real time with the CEO defining what the permanent role actually required. That clarity shaped the search itself, and when the new CHRO was hired, the interim leader stayed engaged through onboarding rather than stepping away on day one.
Four years later, that hire runs both HR and Operations. The engagement could have ended the day the new leader started. Instead, the groundwork built at the front end and the support carried through the back end turned a leadership gap into one of the company’s best long-term talent decisions.
This is the difference between placing a body in a seat and placing a leader who treats the outcome as their own. The fractional marketplaces will give you a resume and a start date. What they will not give you is someone who has a stake in making sure the next permanent leader actually succeeds, because the interim engagement and the search are running through the same firm with the same understanding of what the company needs.
These are the situations where interim or fractional HR leadership makes the most difference.
Your head of HR has resigned or been let go, and the search for a permanent replacement will take months. The people function needs experienced leadership now, not a holding pattern.
You have grown past the point where a generalist or outsourced HR provider can carry the load, but hiring a full-time CHRO before you know exactly what the role requires is premature. A fractional leader stands the function up and helps you define the permanent hire.
An audit, investigation, or regulatory change demands senior HR leadership immediately. Waiting for a search timeline is not an option when the exposure is real and the clock is running.
Two cultures need to become one, benefits need to be harmonized, and retention plans need to be built for key talent. This is specialized, time-bound work that requires a leader who has done it before.
Both provide experienced leadership without a full-time commitment. The distinction is scope and duration.
An interim CHRO steps into the role full-time to bridge a gap, typically while a permanent search is underway. They carry the title, attend the leadership meetings, own the decisions, and hand off cleanly when the new leader starts.
This is the right fit when the seat is empty and the function cannot operate without someone in it every day.
A fractional CHRO works on a recurring but part-time basis, often two to three days a week, for companies that need senior HR leadership but do not yet need or cannot justify a full-time executive.
This is the right fit when the work is real and strategic but the volume does not fill five days a week, common in companies between 50 and 300 employees that are building out the people function for the first time.
We pair the rigor of a retained search with the speed of an interim placement.
We start with the same organizational discovery we use in a retained search: what the role actually requires, what the culture demands, and what has or has not worked in the past. This is where most interim placements go wrong. A resume match without context leads to a leader who is technically qualified but culturally wrong.
Through our partnership with Gig Talent, we draw from a vetted network of Executive Entrepreneurs™ who have held senior HR and people leadership roles at companies of comparable scale and complexity. We present candidates with the same depth of assessment we bring to a permanent search.
The interim or fractional leader starts with a structured onboarding plan, not a cold handoff. We stay involved through the first weeks to make sure the leader has what they need to move quickly and that the company’s expectations are being met.
When the engagement reaches its natural endpoint, whether that is a permanent hire starting or a project completing, we manage the transition. For interim engagements, if a permanent search runs in parallel, the interim leader’s insight into the organization feeds directly into the search process. Fractional engagements conclude when the scope of work is complete or the company is ready to bring the function fully in house.
Interim and fractional engagements at Talent Executives are not a separate business. They run through the same team, the same relationships, and the same understanding of your organization as our retained CHRO and HR executive search practice. When the interim leader helps define the permanent role, that insight shapes the search from the start rather than being lost in a handoff between two firms.
If you are not sure whether you need an interim leader, a fractional engagement, or a permanent search, that is a fine place to start the conversation. We will help you figure out which approach fits the situation, and in many cases, the answer is more than one running together. Read more about our full Interim Leadership program.
Often within the week. Our interim and fractional leaders are experienced operators who have done this before, so the ramp-up period is measured in days, not months. Urgent situations, such as a compliance issue or an unexpected departure, can often be addressed even faster.
An interim CHRO works full-time for a defined period, typically bridging a leadership gap while a permanent search runs. A fractional CHRO works part-time on a recurring basis for companies that need senior HR leadership but do not yet need a full-time executive. Both provide experienced leadership; the distinction is hours per week and duration.
Yes. Some engagements that start as interim end with the leader converting to a permanent role. We structure the engagement so that conversion is possible if it is the right outcome for both sides. In other cases, the interim leader’s deep knowledge of the organization feeds directly into the permanent search, making the eventual hire stronger.
No. Our fractional leaders are certified professionals engaged on a project basis. They are not candidates for permanent placement and are not looking to move into full-time roles. A fractional engagement is designed to deliver senior HR leadership for as long as the company needs it, and it concludes when the scope of work is complete. If a company decides it needs a permanent CHRO, we run that as a separate retained search.
Marketplaces match resumes to role descriptions. We start with organizational discovery, the same process we use in a retained executive search, to understand what the role actually requires before we match a leader to it. The interim engagement and any parallel permanent search run through the same team, so nothing is lost between the two. That continuity is how an interim leader ends up helping hire her own successor rather than just filling a seat until someone else does.
Our interim and fractional practice is currently focused on HR and people leadership, including CHRO, VP of People, VP of HR, and Head of Talent. For other functions, our Interim Leadership page outlines the broader program, and we are always happy to discuss.
Whether you need someone in the seat next week or a strategic HR partner two days a week, we would welcome a conversation about what the work actually requires and which approach fits.
